Stay Healthy Without a Doctor's Prescription

Being fit is not dependent on your doctor's opinion. Though we have come to automatically trust the doctor for an expert opinion, that trust is often unfounded today. The doctors of fifty years ago were concerned about seeing their patients get well and stay that way. Unfortunately, today's doctor needs sick patients to treat if he hopes to continue making a profit from his practice. If his agenda doesn't mesh with a genuine concern to keep his patients healthy, then it is in your best interest to protect your own health.

While your doctor's help is still necessary, you can employ basic techniques that won't have you running to the doctor to treat every sniffle.

Eat Healthy

America's waistline is expanding. And much of that has to do with the typical diet of fast food loaded with carbohydrates, fats and sugar. Eating a balanced meal is difficult to do in a world where everyone must rush through their days to meet impossible schedules. But fried, battered and easy food loaded with toxins will not do much for physical and mental well being.

Eliminate Bad Habits

Habits help make busy days go smoother. But bad habits are financially wasteful and seriously impact health. If you smoke, quit. No patch, chewing gum or pill will ever help you if you don't make the move to butt out. If you find alcohol far too pleasant, stop drinking. No doctor can keep you healthy if you insist on living habits that make you sick.

Get Enough Sleep

Not everyone needs eight hours, but few ever get the quality they need to function. Sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders will affect sleep.

Learn to Meditate

It's not just for Buddhist monks. Our world is filled with enough distractions to elevate blood pressure and stress levels Considering the pressures most of us are under, meditation and prayer should become regular practice.

Exercise More

Fitting a regular exercise routine is difficult for most people. But the difficulty lies in the image of what people think exercise needs to be. Everyone can find time to exercise anywhere, at any time. Whether it's a few leg stretches in the office cubicle or a walk around the block to burn away calories from a recent turkey dinner, exercise doesn't require a gym workout to be effective. You can learn to do mild forms of exercise such as Tai Chi, Qigong or yoga, all of which will improve strength and circulation.

The Medicine of Laughter

It's been proved to work and not just by Norman Cousins. Laughter relaxes tense muscles and produces the hormones that reduce stress levels. It helps ease pain. It improves immune system functioning and improves circulation by relaxing blood vessels. The best medicine comes with a smile and a positive attitude.

Supplement With Vitamins and Minerals

What's on kitchen tables today is deficient in essential nutrients. Too often, that food comes laced with toxins and chemicals that can't be washed off and adds to an overloaded toxic body. Since most Americans don't meet the RDA requirements for good health, supplements are a necessity to keep good health.

None of these methods require a doctor's prescription. But employing them is likely to help keep you healthy and active into your golden years without the need to suffer common age related diseases.
